Josef (Beppo) Römer

Josef (Beppo) Römer (1892-1944), former leader of the Freikorps Oberland (Oberland Free Corps; paramilitary units after WW I); in 1932 he attracted much attention when he took up membership of the KPD (Communist Party). He was imprisoned in a concentration camp from 1933-1939 and after his release tried several times to organize an assassination attempt on Hitler. He built up an illegal organization that had numerous links to, amongst others, economic circles. He was arrested early in 1942, sentenced to death, and executed in 1944.
